New prescribing data from NHS England shows in 2016:
- 52m items were prescribed for diabetes
- £983.7m was the total net ingredient cost
Whereas in 2006:
- 28.9m items were prescribed for diabetes
- £572.4m was the total net ingredient cost
Respiratory disease
7.7 times more likely to die from an avoidable respiratory disease
The most deprived populations in England and Wales are up to 7.7 times more likely to die from an avoidable respiratory disease than the least deprived, says Office of National Statistics figures. Smoking is the most likely contributory factor.
Flu vaccine
The UK now plans to offer the flu vaccine to all children aged two- 11 years.
66% Last winter’s vaccine reduced the risk of flu by 66% in children, according to Public Health England, up 8% on the previous year.
EU health spending
New analysis shows health spending for EU countries expressed as a share of national income. The UK is just above the average, with Luxembourg the worst performer and Sweden, France and Germany joint top.

Saturated fat
13% Scientists who investigated a global population of more than 135,000 people found that cutting saturated fat intake so that it accounted for less than 3% of total calories increased death rates by 13%.
